Rare Earths+ | ELEMENT Recovery Facility

Rare Waste Element is the regional advanced-materials refinery that completes the recovery process begun at Core. Multiple Core facilities process local waste, recover bulk materials and energy, manage carbon dioxide, and concentrate the most complex high-value fractions into consistent material streams. Those concentrated outputs are delivered to Element, where specialized metallurgical, chemical and electrochemical systems separate, refine and prepare them for sale into domestic and global materials markets.


Element is not a recycling center. It is an urban-ore refinery built to recover value from material that conventional recycling systems leave behind. Its feedstock includes metal-rich concentrates, mixed alloys, electronic-material fractions, battery materials, mineral phases, catalytic metals and other complex intermediates recovered by Core. By centralizing the most specialized refining equipment at regional Element facilities, Rare Waste avoids duplicating expensive metallurgical processes at every local site while preserving the speed, flexibility and hyperlocal footprint of the Core network.

Every incoming material stream is sampled, assayed and assigned a digital material record before processing begins. Element’s laboratory systems determine its composition, concentration, contaminants, recoverable value and most efficient processing route. Materials then move through dedicated campaigns based on chemistry rather than being mixed into a single generalized stream. This approach improves recovery, protects product quality and allows Element to adapt as the composition of the urban mine changes.


Element uses a combination of physical concentration, controlled melting, thermal treatment, hydrometallurgy and electrochemical refining. Induction furnaces, electric resistance furnaces and selected arc or plasma systems provide controlled high-temperature processing. Leaching, precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, crystallization, electrowinning and electrorefining separate metals and compounds according to their chemical properties. Each process is selected according to the material being treated, the purity required by the customer and the economics of the recovery campaign.


The system recovers precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium. It recovers nonferrous metals including copper, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, zinc, tin and lead. It recovers battery materials, rare earth concentrates, specialty metals and valuable industrial compounds. Outputs include metal ingots, cathodes, powders, salts, oxides, alloys and refinery-grade intermediates prepared to meet documented customer specifications.


Element is designed around circular energy use. Conditioned syngas and electricity generated by the Rare Waste Core network provide dispatchable energy for regional refining operations. Renewable grid power operates electric furnaces, electrochemical systems, motors, pumps, vacuum equipment and precision controls. Battery storage reduces peak demand, maintains critical operations and stabilizes power supplied by Core and renewable sources.

Element also uses Rare Waste’s proprietary thermal-integration system to recover usable heat from neighboring data centers. Data-center heat supports material drying, process-water heating, leaching, evaporation, solution concentration and furnace-feed preheating. Industrial heat pumps raise lower-temperature heat to the levels required by selected refinery operations. This reduces purchased energy and gives data centers a productive destination for heat that would otherwise be rejected into the atmosphere.


The refinery also recovers heat from its own furnaces and thermal operations. High-temperature heat is transferred through isolated heat exchangers and used to generate steam, preheat incoming materials, support chemical processing and charge thermal-storage systems. Heat produced in one part of Element becomes an energy input for another, reducing both operating cost and total energy demand.


Core remains the primary carbon-management point in the Rare Waste network. Carbon dioxide generated during the conversion of municipal waste is separated and managed at Core before concentrated materials are transported to Element. This allows Element to focus on advanced material recovery instead of repeating Core’s bulk gas-treatment process. Any carbon dioxide produced by Element’s supplemental fuel use is captured through the facility’s dedicated gas-management system and directed into the network’s carbon-utilization, mineralization or storage pathway.


Process water circulates through treatment, filtration and reuse systems. Water from washing, leaching and refining is separated from solids, chemically adjusted and returned to the appropriate process wherever technically possible. Valuable dissolved metals are recovered before the water is reused. Residual treatment streams remain contained, characterized and routed to the correct recovery or stabilization process.


Materials that cannot be economically refined during their first campaign are not discarded. They are retained as documented intermediates, blended into future campaigns or stored until market conditions and recovery technology justify additional processing. Hazardous trace constituents are isolated into controlled concentrates for further recovery or stabilized within tested, non-leaching mineral products. Nothing is treated as valueless simply because it cannot be sold immediately.

Rare Waste Assay tracks materials from receipt through final production. Each output carries a record of its source, composition, processing history, quality and destination. This material passport supports inventory control, customer qualification, regulatory reporting, environmental accounting and transparent measurement of recovery performance. Element knows what entered, what was recovered, what energy was consumed and where every finished output went.


Element creates an important economic advantage for the Rare Waste network. Core facilities turn local waste into energy, bulk commodities and concentrated urban ore. Element aggregates those concentrates at regional scale, where advanced equipment and technical expertise recover materials with significantly greater value. One Element facility supports multiple Core locations, allowing the network to expand without requiring every community to build a complete metallurgical refinery.

This division of labor makes the system scalable. Core stays compact, modular and close to the waste source. Element operates regionally, close to industrial infrastructure, major power connections, data centers, manufacturers and materials buyers. Core eliminates the need to haul untreated waste long distances. Element concentrates the specialized refining operations where they create the greatest technical and economic return.

Core handles the volume. Element unlocks the value.


Together, they transform municipal waste from a disposal liability into a distributed source of energy, metals and critical materials. Rare Waste does not simply divert material from landfills. It mines the material already moving through America’s waste stream and returns it to productive use.
